I'm pretty much a traditionalist, always getting a barbecue sandwich with slaw for my "reviews" and having just reviewed Old Colony Smokehouse back in December, I decided to try something a little different on my latest, most recent stop in Edenton... and it was awesome.
Sarah and I stopped at Old Colony for a quick lunch on the way down to a photo shoot in Hertford. She's always been a real sport about stopping at every barbecue place I want/need to visit and she actually came away the happiest I have ever seen her at a barbecue joint. Sarah got their baked potato and proclaimed it "the best baked potato I have ever had." I tried it and she's not wrong. Not sure what Adam does to that tater, but it's fantastic. She really liked their garden salad as well. Kudos to Adam and his team for making my pescetarian bride a happy lady while I gorge myself with smoked meats.
Speaking of meats...
Old Colony's "3N1Q" is one of their specialty sandwiches with pulled pork barbecue, beef brisket, and Mac-n-cheese. I love Old Colony's regular whole hog pulled pork BBQ sandwich (#4 in my NC Top 25 with a 9.89/10 rating), so I knew I'd appreciate at least a 1/3 of sandwich no matter what. I had their Mac-n-cheese as a side last time and it rocked. And with Adam's reputation, the brisket has got to be the bomb as well.
Individually, these three ingredients by themselves tasted awesome. Put them together piled high in a big fresh bun and - voilà - you have a super sammie of epic proportions.

The whole hog pork was as wonderful as always. Tender and moist, with that woodsy aroma expected from a half day of smoking. Lightly dressed, the pork doesn't dominate the beef which stands on its own merit. I've only had one great beef brisket in NC and with having tried Old Colony's on the 3N1Q, I may just have to try Adam's brisket as I'm fairly certain I may have found a second great NC brisket. The creamy, cheesy Mac adds a wonderful sharpness that compliments the beef and pork's smokey meatiness.

And did I mention the pork belly bites yet? Or the Nutter Butter® pudding dessert? Well, I'd be remiss if I failed to extol the virtues of both. The pork belly (special) was perfect in every way. Melt in your mouth sweet candy goodness. Speaking of candy... that in-house-made Nutter Butter was off the chain fantastic. If it's on the dessert board, get it! Get two!
This isn't a review, as much as it's a recommendation for a sandwich and a side dish and a potato and a Nutter Butter® that I enjoyed so very dang much that I just have to write about it.
